A 62-year-old man died in a tractor accident near Vergas Tuesday night.
According to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office, John Oliver Antonsen, of Lakeville, Minn. was found dead at the scene after being pinned under an older model Case with no cab or protective frame farm tractor.
The accident happened around 9:24 p.m. on Heart Lake Road, near Sybil Lake Road. According to initial information, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of an injury accident involving the rollover of a farm tractor. The tractor operator had not yet been located at that time.
Otter Tail County deputies arrived at the scene a short time later. The farm tractor was lying upside down and partially submerged in about one or two feet of water, in a small lake on the north side of Heart Lake Road.
Antonsen was pinned under the overturned tractor and was submerged under water, according to the accident report.
Authorities believe that the victim was driving on to the narrow north shoulder of the roadway then lost control of the machine as it entered a steep ditch and rolled into the lake. The incident remains under investigation.
The Vergas Fire Department and First Responders, as well as the Perham Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
