Baseball: Legion drops doubleheader to St. Michael-Albertville

The Fat Daddy’s Alexandria American Legion baseball team traveled to St. Michael-Albertville and dropped a doubleheader by scores of 7-3 and 9-8 on Tuesday night.

St. Michael-Albertville put up five runs during the second inning of the nightcap. Alexandria responded with one run in the third and two more in the fifth to make it a 5-3 game. That is as close as they would get, though, as St. Michael-Albertville added a couple insurance runs in the later innings to secure the sweep.

Cody Larson threw a complete game for Alexandria. Larson allowed four earned runs on nine hits and three walks. He struck out three.

Colin Erickson led the offense with two hits and an RBI. Mark Whiting, Chris Fields and Chris Curry also picked up hits.

Alexandria was in position to win the opener before a seventh-inning rally sent things to extra innings. Alexandria went into the final frame leading 8-7. St. Michael-Albertville started a rally with a walk and used an Alexandria error to tie the game at eight apiece. The home team then ended things in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly. It was a tough loss to take after Alexandria outhit St. Michael 16-8.

“Too many walks by the pitching staff and a few timely errors led to the outcome of the game,” head coach Kevin Engebretson said. “Jordan Hirsch started on the mound and threw into the sixth inning. Shawn Krueger did a nice job in relief in the final two frames, but unfortunately, picked up the tough luck loss.”

Parker Giroux had a big game at the plate with four singles. Ross Thompson, Erickson, Curry and Krueger all added two hits apiece. Erickson also drove in two runs.
