Fun and flags on the Fourth

From land, lakes and air, a festive Fourth of July was celebrated throughout Douglas County. The airplanes you saw flying over Alexandria over the weekend were likely part of the American Barnstormers Tour, a nostalgic salute to the adventurous pilots from the 1920s and 1930s. Twenty restored aircraft were displayed at Chandler Field and took to the skies for a “Parade of Flight” throughout the three-day event. Meanwhile, the 31st annual Lake Carlos Fourth of July boat parade once again attracted a colorful flotilla. Participants motored by the bridge between Lakes Carlos and Darling in single file. One group of participants touted their connection to Alexandria’s chain of lakes. Several other boat parades were held in the area, including on Lake Victoria where the waterskiing trio of Kyle Johnson, Luke Hansen and Joria Downing took home the first place trophy. The 22nd annual West Union 4th of July parade took place Sunday afternoon. One of the many entertaining units in the parade was a band of kazoo players. The West Union Country Kids 4-H Club and the West Union community sponsor the event.
