Girls' golf: Leland, Roering in Mn-Wis Junior Cup

Alexandria’s Maggie Leland and Minnewaska’s Sarah Roering shared the stage as the two competed for Team Minnesota in the 2010 Minnesota-Wisconsin PGA Junior Cup Matches in Eau Claire.

The two seniors, both state champions this year, weren’t the only big name golfers on the girls’ team as Class AAA players Betsy Kelly of Forest Lake (4th), McKenzie Neisen of New Prague (2nd), Steffi Neisen of New Prague (5th), Mary Sweeney of Woodbury (9th), Taylor Wells of Rochester (47th) and Class AA players Anna Laorr of Breck (3rd), Jordan Price of Byron (4th) and Alyssa Kalthoff of Albany (12th), along with North Dakota’s Liz Strom of Shanley (2nd in Class A) were also on the star-studded list of competitors.

Leland and Roering dropped their four-ball match to Jenna Peters of Kohler, Wisconsin and Erika Pfaender of Pewaukee, Wisconsin 1-up on day. Minnesota, however, won the overall four-ball match competition 7-5.

On day two, Roering picked up a 5-and-4 win over Pfaender, with Leland falling to Lisbeth Brooks of Waunakee, Wisconsin 4-and-3 as Minnesota dropped the singles matches battle 14-10 and fell short in total team points to Wisconsin 19-17.

This is a border battle between the top 24 high school players from the Minnesota section and the Wisconsin section, using a Ryder Cup team format.
