Card boys' track has six All-state athletes

Dan Gorghuber led the way with his sixth place finish in the 110-meter hurdles

Six athletes earned all-state honors with top-nine finishes at the state track meet to wrap up another strong season for the Cardinal boys’ track and field team this past Saturday.

Seven Alexandria athletes competed at the meet as the team finished tied for 33rd overall. Dan Gorghuber led the way with a sixth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles and an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter dash. The junior ran the hurdles in a time of 15.44, while coming across the line in 49.82 seconds in the 400.

Bob Guetter and Ben Vickstrom qualified for two events each, as well. Guetter’s toss in the finals on Saturday measured 52’5.75.” That was good for ninth place overall. He just missed reaching the finals in the discus with a toss of 147’11” on Friday. That was good for 11th place.

Vickstrom finished eighth on Saturday in the 200 finals. He ran a prelim time of 22.26 and followed that up with a time of 12.96 to secure the top 10 finish. He also ran the 100-meter dash in 11.63 seconds, coming up just short of making the finals with a 12th-place finish.

Andy Werk finished just outside of a qualifying distance in the shot put on Friday. His prelims toss of 50’0.25” was good for 13th place.

The lone Cardinal relay team at the meet also qualified for the finals on Saturday. Mike Huss, Felix Coleman, Mitch Ronning and Gorghuber ran the 4x400 in a season-best time of 3:25.79 in the prelims. They dropped more than a second off their previous season-best time. They then had to wait to see if it would be good enough to advance. Their time held on by .06 seconds.

The group took advantage of the opportunity and earned all-state honors on Saturday. They finished ninth in the rain with a time of 3:28.72.
