Gold rush: Girls' second at state track and field meet

Rosey Erickson and Jamie Piepenburg both brought home individual state titles

It was state championships all around for Cardinal junior Rosey Erickson and sophomore Jamie Piepenburg.

Erickson captured the State Class AA long jump title with a leap of 18’7.25” on Friday, and Piepenburg clocked in at 4:48.23 in the 1,600-meter run on Saturday for her second state title in two years.

She was the 3,200-meter champion in 2009.

Those two titles, along with their finishes in three other events, gave Alexandria the team runner-up trophy with 45 points.

Hopkins captured top honors in the meet with 81 points.

Erickson won the long jump title on her last of six jumps, beating Nicole Murphey of Blaine by 5.5 inches.

She was third in the 200-meter dash on Saturday with a time of 25.44, trailing Park Center’s Sasha Davis, who finished in 24.81. Erickson had qualified for the event on Friday with a time of 25.34.

She was also seventh in the 100-meter dash in 12.47, improving her prelim time on Friday by 0.04. Leading the way was Davis, who ran the event in 12:06.

Piepenburg’s 1,600-meter title Saturday came as she finished 0.84 seconds faster than second place finisher Becca Dyson of Roseville.

She finished second in the 3,200-meter run yesterday, 6.3 seconds behind Maria Hauger of Shakopee. Piepenburg was the defending champion in that event.

Hauger was also the State Class AA cross country champion.
