The Sauk River Watershed District recently received top honors with “Program of The Year” from the Minnesota Association of Watershed Districts.
The program was designed to get students into the field for a hands-on experience to better educate them on natural resources, water quality and conservation.
Several local schools initially participated in the Senior High Outdoor Resources Education Program (SHORE), and that has expanded to almost all the area high schools.
The program helps school districts meet science curriculum requirements while at the same time providing a very interactive, outdoor approach where the students are walking the riverbank and collecting samples.
The Sauk River Watershed District partly funds the program, providing instruction and equipment using grant money and money from the general fund. Schools provide approximately 25 percent of the cost through in-kind contributions of time and facilities.
