5A-West baseball: Streaks fall to EVW in championship
Osakis still advanced to the Section 5A final four Monday
A rough first inning was too much to overcome for the Osakis baseball team as Eden Valley-Watkins upended the Silverstreaks 12-2 last Thursday to win the Section 5A West championship.
A first inning plagued by Osakis errors allowed the Eagles to jump out to a 5-0 lead in the first. Two fly balls were lost in the sun, allowing runs to cross the plate. That set the tone for what would be a tough day for the Osakis defense.
“EVW is a good baseball team and probably has a good chance at winning state this year,” Osakis head coach Shad Schmidt said. “But for us to start so poorly was the difference in today’s game. You just can’t give teams extra outs, especially good teams.”
The Eagles knocked Jordan Frederick out of the game in the third inning. They added to a 5-1 lead by using three hits and an error to score three more runs off Frederick. He allowed eight runs, four earned, on six hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings.
The Eagles then extended that lead to 11 in the bottom of the fourth. They started the inning with two triples and used a double, a single and a walk to push four more runs across.
That put the pressure on the Silverstreaks, who needed to score at least two to extend the game. The top of the fifth started well as Osakis loaded the bases with nobody out. Doug Zimmel got an RBI single with one out, but a strikeout looking and a pop up to first ended the game in five.
“We need to play desperate baseball at this time of the year and play with a lot more heart and desire,” Schmidt said.
The Silverstreaks had a chance to redeem themselves this past Monday night. They were scheduled to play East Central in Pierz for a chance to play the loser of Ogilvie and Eden Valley-Watkins last night. Two wins would put Osakis in the Section 5A championship tomorrow, Thursday, with the Silverstreaks needing to win twice to advance to the state tournament.
