Boys' golf: Wagner advances to state golf for Knights
Matt Wagner will represent the West Central Area boys’ golf team at the state tournament after the Knights finished second at the Section 5A meet in Benson last week.
WCA shot a team score of 357, second only to Ortonville’s 324. The Knights edged out Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa five four strokes and Dawson-Boyd by five.
Wagner and Calvin Anderson both shot 84s through 18 to lead the Knights. The teammates had to play a sudden-death playoff with the final individual state tournament berth on the line.
“It was hard walking down the fairway coaching both guys,” head coach Kraig Hunter said. “But they were both good sports about it. Even though Calvin didn’t win the playoff, it was his score today that really pushed us ahead of BBE and Dawson-Boyd to claim the runner-up trophy.
“It was a tough situation because one of them had to lose, but on the other hand, it was a good situation because we were guaranteed one of them would be in the state tournament. Matt will represent us well down there.”
Logan Pfingsten shot a 93 to finish third for the Knights. Luke LaValley rounded out the WCA scorers with a 96. Tanner Drewelow of Chokio-Alberta won the tournament with a one-over par 73.
Wagner and the rest of the Class A field will play at Pebble Creek in Becker next Wednesday and Thursday.
