Card girls' track and field: Piepenburg, Erickson qualify for Class AA meet

The two will represent Alexandria in five events.

Both Jamie Piepenburg and Rosey Erickson repeated as Section 8AA champions Saturday, punching their ticket to the state track and field meet this weekend at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Piepenburg, who is the Section 8AA and the State Class AA 3,200-meter defending champion, repeated her performance at Sauk Rapids-Rice last week, smashing her time of 10:54.94 last year’s section championship with a 10:41.29.

She also ran to first in the 1,600-meter run with a 5:01.91, breaking last year’s mark by more than seven seconds, defending that Section 8AA title as well. She had finished eighth in the 1,600-meter run last year at the state meet.

Both times were faster than state qualifying. In fact, her 3,200 time was nearly 22 seconds faster and her 1,600 time was 2.5 seconds faster.

Erickson repeated as section champion in both the long jump and 200-meter dash, and added a 100-meter dash championship to that collection.

She cruised to a repeat victory in the 200-meter dash this year with a time of 25.82, breaking state qualifying by 0.14. She owns the section record with a 25.28, set last year.

Her second straight title in the long jump came with a distance of 17’8.25”, well over the state qualifying distance of 17’6”

Her finals time at this year’s section meet in the 100-meter dash was 12.64.

She had advanced to state in all three events last year, finishing fourth in the 100 with a time of 12.63, third in the 200 in 25.98 and second in the long jump with a leap of 18’2.75”.

Helping the Cards to their third place team finish were Chelsey Richardson, who finished fifth in the 1,600-meter run in 5:16.39, a new personal best by six seconds.

Joie Warnes, who grabbed fifth place in the triple jump with a leap of 33’11.5” and Shelby Iverson with a seventh place finish in the 800-meter run in 2:24.77.

Leah Stinson had a personal best in the 1600-meter run with a three-second improvement.
