Card boys' track: Seven head for state meet
Dan Gorghuber, Bob Guetter and Ben Vickstrom all won two individual events apiece
A pair of wins by Dan Gorghuber, Ben Vickstrom and Bob Guetter, a season-best time in the 4x400-meter relay and a second place individual finish by Andy Werk earned seven Cardinal athletes state track and field berths during the Section 8AA meet at Sauk Rapids-Rice last weekend.
It also earned the Alexandria squad a second place team finish behind Moorhead.
Gorghuber will actually compete in three events as he anchored the state-qualifying relay team that also included Mike Huss, Felix Coleman and Mitch Ronning.
They were less than three seconds off the state-qualifying time as they sprinted to a 3:27.11, a five-second improvement over their Central Lakes Conference runner-up time.
Gorghuber earned Section 8AA championship honors in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.96 and claimed top honors in the 400-meter dash as well in 49.49, both personal bests.
His 110 hurdle time – both in the prelims (15.34) and the finals (49.49) – were better than the state qualifying time of 15:36, as was his finals time in the 400-meter dash.
He ran a 50.97 in the prelims and finished up with a 49.49. State qualifying time is 49.73.
He competed in the state meet last year in the 400-meter dash, finishing 12th in 51.96.
Ben Vickstrom was also a double winner, sprinting to gold in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.
He broke state qualifying in the prelims and the finals of both events, running an 11.00 and 11.14 in the 100, and 22.11 and 22.34 in the 200. State qualifying is 11.21 in the 100-meter dash and 22.72 in the 200-meter dash.
Bob Guetter earned top honors in both the shot put and the discus as he tossed the shot 52’0”, then came in with a 161’5” in the discus.
His discus distance was 4’4” farther than state qualifying.
Guetter competed in the state meet in the shot put last year, finishing 10th with a distance of 50’0.75”.
He will be joined in the shot put as Andy Werk earned a state trip, finishing second with a toss of 51’4.25”.
Werk’s toss was a personal best by nearly a foot.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Jordan Erickson, Ben Vickstrom, Mike Huss and Michael Joerger placed third overall in the 15-team competition and the 4x800-meter relay team of Elijah Hartsell, Austin McCoy, Matt Burow, and Zac Bartholomeo ran a season best time to capture fourth.
The 4x200-meter relay team of Derek Goracke, Felix Coleman, Michael Joerger, and Zach VanOrsdel also had their season best time to finish fourth.
Mitch Ronning moved up in the standing to place fourth in the 800-meter run and Tanner Thomson placed fifth with his toss of 137’2” in the discus.
Connor Schuneman concluded the scoring on Saturday with a strong effort in the 400-meter dash to place seventh.
