Section 5A boys' golf: West Central Area grabs 5A-North title
The West Central Area boys’ golf team picked a good time to shoot its best round of the season.
The Knights fired a team score of 343 to take the Section 5A-North title last Friday. That edged out Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa by two strokes to take the championship trophy back to Barrett. This came after the Knights finished eighth out of 10 teams in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference with 86 points during the regular season.
“We were just elated that the boys peaked and put together their best round of the year when it counted,” head coach Kraig Hunter said. “Minnewaska is a challenging golf course and the winds picked up late. A lot of meets this year, we’ve had three good scores or played a lot of good golf but have had a couple of bad holes or a high fourth score. Today, it came together, and the boys are well deserved champions.”
Matt Wagner led the charge with a second-place individual finish. He shot a 78 before Logan Pfingsten came in with an 86, good for sixth place.
BBE still held a three-stroke advantage after both WCA’s and the Jaguars’ top three golfers were in the clubhouse. Calvin Anderson shot a 91 at the No. 3 spot for the Knights.
That left both teams waiting to see how the Knights’ Luke LaValley would finish his round. He needed to enter the clubhouse with at least a 90 to tie BBE’s 345. He did two better, shooting an 88 after finishing with a 42 on the back nine.
“We knew Luke shot a 46 on the front,” Hunter said. “He really made the difference today by shooting that solid back nine 42.”
The Knights hope to carry that momentum into the section meet when they travel to Benson today, Friday, with a trip to the state tournament on the line.
Osakis’ Paul Hartmann carded an 89 to earn an individual spot in the Section 5A boys’ golf tournament today, Friday, in Benson.
