Resorters baseball: Alexandria Senators win two of three, Carlos wins pair, Bluedogs take three
The Alexandria Senators played three one-run games last week, winning two of them over Carlos and Ashby with a loss to Miltona sandwiched in between.
Collin Modahl and Nick Petro combined to strike out 19 batters in the win over the Ashby A’s on Sunday. Modahl got the start and struck out 11 in five innings to pick up the win.
Petro added some offense to go along with his four innings of work on the mound. He and Dylan Carlson had two hits to lead the offensive attack.
The Senators scored all seven of their runs in the first four innings to take an early 7-1 lead. The A’s battled back with a lone run in the sixth and four more in the seventh to make it 7-6. Petro shut the door in the final two innings to hold onto the one-run lead.
Alexandria collected 16 hits but stranded 14 runners in a 7-6 loss to Miltona on Saturday.
Tim Erickson started on the mound and threw three strong innings for the Senators. He did not allow an earned run and left with a 4-3 lead in the fourth. Derek Miller threw the final five innings and took the loss after the Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead.
Modahl, Miller and Erickson each had three hits to lead the Senators’ offense. Carlson, Doug Breitkreutz and Petro added two apiece.
Alexandria played one of its best games of the young season on May 22 to hand Carlos its first loss of the season in a 6-5 game.
The Senators were trailing 5-4 heading into the ninth inning. Breitkreutz delivered a two-out single to drive in Clay Grimstad with the tying run. Alex Walker then sent Breitkreutz home with the winning run with an RBI double.
The two teams went back and forth the whole day. The biggest lead of the day was two after the Cougars scored in the top of the fourth to make it 2-0. The Senators responded with two of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie things up.
Carlos took another two-run lead in the fifth, but again Alexandria would answer. The Senators scored one in the bottom of the seventh, setting up the heroics for Breitkreutz and Walker in the ninth.
Modahl and Miller combined to scatter eight hits on the mound. Miller got the win by working the final four innings.
Alexandria now has a week off before welcoming two teams in next weekend. Osakis comes to town on June 12 for a 3 p.m. first pitch. The Senators then welcome Kensington to Alexandria for a 2 p.m. first pitch on June 13.

Bluedogs win three
The Brandon-Evansville Bluedogs made it look easy on its way to three wins over the Memorial Day weekend.
B-E 14, Kensington 0
The Bluedogs got quality pitching from three different players and plenty of offense to back them up in the weekend finale.
Travis Santjer got the win after going three innings. He allowed two hits and struck out three in his short stint on the hill.
Meissner and Santjer also put together strong games at the plate. Santjer led the team with three RBI, while Meissner reached base four times on a double and three walks. He scored three times and drove in one.
B-E 17, Osakis 1
That put the finishing touches on what was a very productive weekend for Meissner.
He put up huge numbers in the Bluedogs’ blowout win over the Hawks. Meissner finished 2-for-4 with four runs scored and four RBI. He delivered an early blow with a grand slam in the second inning.
That was the first of three home runs by the Bluedogs. Matt Bruns answered with a three-run shot in the third, followed by a solo home run by Chris Shea.
That made it easy for Kyle Bruns to pick up his second win of the season.
B-E 9, Urbank-PP 3
Mike Bruns held down the Bombers for seven innings and his offense got him the needed run support to get the weekend off on the right foot last Friday.
Bruns allowed just two hits in his seven-plus innings of work. He allowed three runs, while walking six and striking out four.
Brent Meissner, Santjer and Lee Nelson gave him some runs to work with. All three finished with two RBI.
