The Road Runner program was started at Garfield Elementary School in 2001 to engage students in regular exercise and reward them for their efforts. Students earn points for running laps on a designated course during the school day. They keep score sheets of their progress, with all entries initialed by witnesses. T-shirts are earned at the 500, 1,500, 2,500 and 3,500 point levels. Plaques are awarded for 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 points. For 4,000 points, which equals 1,000 miles, students are awarded a three-column trophy with a plaque. Sixth graders Chris and Casey Call, twin sons of Todd and Jill Call of Alexandria, have been working toward the 4,000-point goal since kindergarten. They completed their final lap on Wednesday, with classmates joining them.
