6A-South softball playoffs: Arrows top Knights, Chargers fall
The Ashby softball team made easy work of West Central Area in the opening round of the Section 6A tournament on Tuesday.
The Arrows jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three and added seven runs in the fifth to win 10-0 in five innings.
Haley Ness had another dominant performance from the circle. She threw a two-hitter and struck out 11, while walking just two. Ness also went 3-for-4 from the plate with an RBI. Andrea Moe added two hits and two RBI, while Jaden Witt went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
“We played a great game today with dominant pitching and defense and are looking forward to the rest of the section tournament,” head coach Joey Andreasen said.

Verndale 8, Brandon-Evansville 1
Eight errors cost the Brandon-Evansville softball team a chance to advance in the Section 6A tournament on Tuesday.
The Chargers’ defense did not give themselves much of a chance in the 8-1 loss to Verndale. The Pirates took advantage of those errors by scoring at least one run in each of the first four innings. That allowed them to build a 7-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
“Verndale only had six hits, compared to our four,” head coach Erika Westby said. “But they were errorless in the field and we made eight costly errors. We just didn’t show up mentally for today’s game, and it was really disheartening to end the season that way.”
Carli Randt got the start and allowed two earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. She gave up four hits and four walks, while striking out one. Michelle Bruns relieved her in the fourth and threw the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on two hits.
The Chargers wrapped up the season with a 10-10 record overall. They finished as co-champions with Ashby in the Pheasant Conference with a 10-2 record.
