6AA-West softball playoffs: Laker girls top Streeters in opener, fall to Bulldogs in semis
A stellar season came to an abrupt end for the Minnewaska Laker girls as they fell to Paynesville 3-0 in the second round of the Section 6AA-West softball playoffs Tuesday.
The Lakers, who had split a pair of 1-0 contests with the Bulldogs during the regular season, couldn’t collect on a pair of bases-loaded opportunities in the sixth and seventh innings as Whitney Woehler pitched her way out of jams twice.
The Lakers had just four hits in the game – one each from Brook Falk, Breanna Jenks, Aundrea Johnson and Brooke Winter, all singles.
Laura Paulson had seven strikeouts in the game, but allowed six hits and walked two.
Minnewaska ended its season 18-4 and earned a share of the West Central South Conference championship.

Minnewaska cruised through its first game in the Section 6AA-West softball tournament Friday, shutting down Sauk Centre 10-0 to advance to the second round.
The Lakers’ matchup yesterday was a tiebreaker of sorts as Minnewaska has met Paynesville twice during the regular season, with each team winning a game by a 1-0 score.
The Laker duo of Laura Paulson and Kaylee Jacobs paired up for a no-hitter against Sauk Centre Friday, and two fielding errors broke up a perfect game. Paulson struck out five, and neither pitcher allowed a walk and ending the game after four and half innings.
Minnewaska had 10 hits in the game as Breanna Jenks had a pair of doubles to drive in one run and Abby Kreitlow cracked a triple to bring home two runs. They scored eight runs in the bottom of the second to break the game open.
