5A-West softball playoffs: Rajdl scores game-winner for Osakis

Osakis’ Hailey Rajdl drove in the tying run then scored the game-winner as the Silverstreaks defeated Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in the Section 5A-West semifinal Tuesday at Minnewaska, putting the Streaks into the West championship against Kimball.
The Jaguars’ Michelle Sanders and Osakis’ Sabrina Zimmel were locked up in a 1-1 tie before BBE scored one in the top of the sixth.
The Silverstreaks responded with their backs against the wall in the bottom of that inning. Mercedes Klimek led off with a hard hit double to left-center field and was brought home on a single by Rajdl.
With two outs, Kiera Zimmel fouled off a number of pitches before working out a walk. Rajdl got a good jump on a ball in the dirt in the following plate appearance and broke to third when the ball got away from the catcher. A throw down to third short-hopped the bag and went into left field, allowing Rajdl to come home with what turned out to be the winning run.
Sabrina Zimmel got the first two outs of the seventh before working her way out of a jam. Brittany Roelike reached on a perfect bunt down the third-base line. She stole second and eventually reached third on a wild pitch. Zimmel put an end to the drama on the next pitch, getting a swinging strikeout to send her team to the subsection finals.
Zimmel kept the Jaguars’ offense off balance all night. She scattered eight hits and issued no walks, while striking out five.
Klimek and Rajdl each had two hits in the game, none bigger than the ones that set up the two-run sixth inning. Dani Chisholm scored the first run of the game for Osakis in the bottom of the third when she came home on an RBI single by Brianne Giesler.
“Hailey, Mercedes, Brianna and Dani had the big hits for us today,” Stigman said. “All four came up big in getting us on the scoreboard and getting the big hit when we needed it…We are very proud of this win. The girls played solid defense behind solid pitching, and the hitters got the two big hits we needed.”
That set up a game against second-seeded Kimball Area for a chance to advance to the section final. That game was scheduled for last night, Thursday, at Minnewaska. The Silverstreaks beat the Cubs 9-3 on April 9. The winner advances to face either Barnum or Braham in the Section 5A championship on June 1 at Whitney Field in St. Cloud. Game two, if necessary, would be played on June 3.
