Alex girls' golf: Cards are Central Lakes Conference championsAlexandria had four girls named All-Conference
The Alexandria girls' golf team wrapped up a dominating run through the Central Lakes Conference season with a win at the CLC championship in Fergus Falls on Monday.
The Cardinals shot a 336, seven shots ahead of St. Cloud Apollo. That wrapped up a perfect season in the CLC where Alexandria won all six of its conference meets. That resulted in 63 total team points and an 8.5-point lead in the final conference standings to wrap up another CLC title for the Cardinals.
"I am quite pleased with our performance over the entire conference season," head coach Tim Zupfer said. "It takes a consistent effort to run the table and win all six conference meets. Apollo's continued improvement made this accomplishment even more impressive."
All six of the Cardinal golfers finished in the top 20, individually. Maggie Leland made it six straight CLC wins with her 74. She cruised to conference medalist honors with an average that was 10 shots better than the nearest competitor.
Maxine Carlson, Brynn Novotny and Amanda Bigger joined Leland on the All-CLC team. The top 14 scorers in the final conference standings earned that honor, while those finishing 15-20 were honorable mention athletes. Lauren Johnson and Caroline Roers received that honor.
Carlson finished 10 shots behind Leland at Fergus Falls on Monday for a sixth-place individual finish. She shot an 84, while Johnson carded a personal best 87 for a 10th-place finish. Novotny and Roers were 17th overall with rounds of 91 to wrap up the scoring for Alexandria.
The depth of the Cardinals helped them run away with the CLC title. Now they hope it can help them advance to another state tournament appearance. The Section 8AAA tournament will take place in Long Prairie June 3-4. Action is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on both days.
