Smith files to run against Westrom

Bennett Smith has filed as a DFL (Democratic/ Farm/Labor) candidate for Minnesota House of Representatives in District 11A.

Bennett Smith has filed as a DFL (Democratic/ Farm/Labor) candidate for Minnesota House of Representatives in District 11A.

The seat is currently held by Torrey Westrom, R-Elbow Lake.

Smith is seeking endorsement at the District 11 convention to be held on June 10 in Alexandria.

Smith grew up on a farm just southwest of Donnelly, where his parents and grandmother still live. He said he still helps with the farming, but has been focusing lately on getting his college degree.

Smith has spent all of his life in this area of Minnesota with the exception of his freshman year in college at the University of Minnesota in Crookston and a semester abroad studying at the University of Buenos Aires in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In May, he received his degree in political science from the University of Minnesota, Morris and was the recipient of the Curtis H. Larson award, which is bestowed upon the student selected to address the graduating class.

Smith supported his way through college by waiting on tables and is still employed at the Bello Cucina Italian restaurant in Morris.

Smith said he loves rural Minnesota and the people.

“If you want to hear me ‘geek-out,’ just get me talking about the history of our county, or my family genealogy,” Smith said.

Smith said that faith is a guiding force in his life. He has volunteered for Stevens County 4-H events, the non-profit coffee shop (Common Cup), student organizations, church functions, and DFL party events.

Smith said he enjoys helping his uncle and grandpa on their dairy farm, keeping a vegetable garden, nature (especially prairie exploring), singing in the church choir, and cheering on the UMM Cougars.
