District 206 elementary students celebrated the district’s annual track and field events last week.

Sixth graders from throughout the district competed on Monday, 4th graders on Tuesday and 5th graders on Wednesday.

Throughout the three days, there were about 1,100 students involved in the track and field meets, including students from all District 206 elementary schools as well as from St. Mary’s, New Testament and Zion schools.

According to district physical education staff, the track and field meet is a great way to celebrate and showcase fitness as well as learn about teamwork and sportsmanship.

The first District 206 track and field meet was held in 1971. Track records have been recorded since 1975.

Three long-time records were broken this year at the 6th grade meet:

• Megan Hasz of Voyager ran a 2:40.2 in the 800 meter run, breaking the old record of 2:40.9 set by Snuffy Alto in 1983.

• Wensia Johnson of New Testament set two new records. She ran the 200-meter dash in 27.75 seconds, breaking the previous record of 29.82 set by Christy Andrews in 1983. Johnson also broke a record from 1983 held by Shannon Monahan in the 100-meter dash. Johnson ran it in 13.0 seconds, breaking the old record of 13.3.
