Resorters baseball: Alexandria Senators bounce Long Prairie

The team used 14 hits to grab the 8-4 victory

The Alexandria Senators put together 14 hits and three Alexandria pitchers combined to strike out eight Long Prairie Predators as Alexandria posted an 8-7 win in Resorters League action played at Alexandria’s Knute Nelson Memorial Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Senators posted a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning when Mike Lloyd drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on a single by Doug Breitkreutz. Breitkreutz advanced to second on the play at the plate and then scored on a single by Matt Strong to give the Senators the 2-0 lead.

The Predators got on the scoreboard in the top of the second, using a leadoff double and two infield outs to cut the Senators’ lead in half.

Alexandria tallied three times in the bottom of the third, with Erik Maas and Lloyd each drawing one-out walks and Breitkreutz singling to load the bases. Strong followed with his second hit of the game, driving in a pair of runs and Nick Petro’s two-out base hit plated the third run of the inning, pushing the Senators’ lead to 5-1.

Maas scored the Senators’ sixth run in the bottom of the fourth inning, reaching on a single and eventually scoring on a fielder’s choice by Breitkreutz. Long Prairie posted a single run in the sixth, using a walk, a stolen base and a base hit to make the score 6-2, but Alexandria appeared to put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with Maas collecting his second hit and scoring his third run of the game and Alex Walker reaching base on an error and eventually scoring on an RBI single by Dylan Carlson to make the score 8-2.

Long Prairie mounted a furious come-back in the top of the seventh, using a pair of hit batters, three singles and a big, bases-loaded double to score five runs, cutting the Senators’ lead to 8-7. Collin Modahl, pitching in relief, was able to strand the game-tying run at second base, and the Predators never threatened again.

Maas, Breitkreutz, Strong and Jesse Flaten each had two hits to pace the Senators attack. Strong’s three RBI were a season high. Derek Miller, Flaten and Modahl combined to strike out eight Predators while allowing nine hits.

The Senators return to Knute Nelson Memorial Park this weekend, hosting the Carlos Cougars at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
