Resorters baseball: Brandon-Evansville splits pair in Resorters West

The Miltona Tigers traveled to Evansville to take on the Brandon/Evansville Bluedogs on a nice sunny Sunday afternoon. Fans in attendance were treated to a see-saw contest that culminated in a dramatic finish.

The Bluedogs jumped out on top as Tiger starter Chris Koep was touched up for three in the first and one more in the second.

The Bluedogs held the 4-0 advantage until the Tiger fourth when Sam Steidl led off with a walk and Jake Leuschke singled, sending Steidl to third.

Leuschke then stole second and Justin Walsh drew a walk to load the bases.

After a strikeout, Andrew Radjl drew another walk to force in the first run for Miltona.

Zac Beireis followed up with a base on balls of his own which resulted in the second Miltona score.

Ryan Emter then slapped a single through the infield, scoring two more to knot the score at 4-4.

Miltona seized its first lead as Cody Curry singled and came around to score in the fifth inning.

Koep, meanwhile, settled down and pitched three scoreless frames. John Mohror relieved Koep in the sixth and got in some early trouble in his first inning of work, but was able to minimize the damage after allowing two runs.

An unusual play occurred in the inning as the Bluedogs loaded the bases and had one already in, a Brandon hitter singled sharply to center.

One Brandon run scored but as the ball returned to the infield, the Bluedog runner who had rounded third returned to the base.

Another Bluedog runner was headed for third and Tiger shortstop Kevin Engebretson chased him to the base and then tagged the runner who was already there as he stepped off the bag.

The play was initially ruled a double-play and Miltona returned to the dugout with the third out recorded.

After considerable conversation, the call was over-turned and the Tigers were forced to return to the field with two out and with Brandon runners on second and third.

The inning finally ended with a defensive gem by Tiger shortstop Engebretson and first baseman Walsh.

Miltona went into their half of the ninth still trailing 6-5.

With one out, Beireis beat out a bunt single and advanced to second as the throw got away from the Brandon first baseman.

Beireis would score on a Ryan Emter single, but Emter was thrown out on a nice Bluedog relay to second base.

Engebretson then beat out another bunt single, and after stealing second, he scored on a Curry single, giving the Tigers a 7-6 lead.

Miltona would come up just short in closing out the dramatic comeback win. With two outs and two Bluedog runners in scoring position, the Tiger infield nearly made one more great play, but the throw tailed away and the two runners raced home, winning the game for Brandon/Evansville by a score of 8-7.

Bluedogs Teddy Wood and Tyson Meissner keyed that ninth inning rally as they scored those winning runs.

Emter paced the Tiger offense with three hits. Engebretson and Curry added two each. Steidl, Walsh, Leuschke and Beireis tallied one hit a-piece.

Mike Bruns pitched the first three and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on three hits and four walks, striking out six.

Travis Santjer saw duty for four and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk, striking out three.

Brandon-Evansville was led at the plate by N. Meissner Josh Meissner with two hits each, while Santjer and N. Meissner each drove in a pair of runs.

Clarissa 3, BE 0

It was a tough day at the plate for the Brandon-Evasnville Bluedogs as they fell 3-0 to Clarissa May 9.

Clarissa pitcher Charlie Woida held the Bluedogs to just three hits in six innings for the win, while Bluedog Travis Santjer went the first five frames, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits and four walks, striking out three.

Nate Meissner finished out the final one-third of an ining, getting the last out and the win.

Mike Bruns finished up as he went five four innings, giving up just one hit and three walks.

Tyson Meissner, Chris Shea and Santjer each had one hit.
