The Ride of Silence worldwide bike rally is set for Wednesday, May 19 at 7 p.m. Participants should meet in the parking lot of US Bank in Alexandria at 6:30 p.m. A one-hour slow ride will take place on Broadway onto the Central Lakes Trail.
The Ride of Silence honors those who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. At 7 p.m. around the world, cyclists will take to the roads in a silent protest.
Cyclists are asked to ride no faster than 12 miles per hour for no longer than an hour and to remain silent during the ride.
The purpose of the ride is to mourn cyclists who have been killed by motorists; raise awareness of cyclists on the road; to have motorists made aware that they need to share the road; and to show that cyclists are not going away.
Participants are asked to wear black arm bands, red if they have been involved in a bike/motor vehicle accident. Helmets are required; bright clothing and lights are recommended for the ride home.
There is no fee to participate. For information, contact Jake’s Bikes at (320) 219-7433.
