Letter - Trolls disrupt online debate
I think it’s about time that the Echo Press took a long look at doing away with anonymous commenting online. It leads to insults, backstabbing, inflammatory remarks, and in some cases, pure slander.
To the editor:
I think it’s about time that the Echo Press took a long look at doing away with anonymous commenting online. It leads to insults, backstabbing, inflammatory remarks, and in some cases, pure slander. Someone expressing an opinion through the Opinion page needs to verify identity, but anyone and everyone that cares to can take potshots with no valid point or knowledge of the situation. It’s completely irresponsible to allow this sort of commenting. The only reason to do it might be to drive up page hits and for marketing.
It’s not restricted to the Echo Press but many forums are moving away from it. It’s called Trolling.
Troll definition: A Troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.
It’s not a compliment to be a Troll.
