Steffel advances to state speech competition
Jefferson High School (JHS) student Katelyn Steffel advanced to the state speech tournament in the category of Poetry Interpretation.
Jefferson High School (JHS) student Katelyn Steffel advanced to the state speech tournament in the category of Poetry Interpretation. She qualified at the Section 8AA speech meet in Bemidji on April 13.
The top 12 speakers (six from the north sub-section and six from the south) in each of 13 categories competed in two rounds, with the top six meeting in the finals.
From there, the top three advanced to state.
Alexandria results are as follows: Steffel, 3rd in Poetry; Caroline Roers, 4th in Great Speeches, earning a first alternate to state spot; Alex Blaser, 6th in Extemporaneous Reading; Hayley Thull, 6th in Creative Expression.
Also competing at the tournament were Colin Ryan and Todd Johnson, both in Extemporaneous Speaking.
The state tournament will be at Gustavus Adolphus College on Friday, April 23. The JHS team is coached by Scott Fodness and Matt Amundson.
