Regional Math Masters event held

The 6th grade regional Math Masters tournament was held in Alexandria March 12. Seven Alexandria School District 206 teams competed in the tournament.

The 6th grade regional Math Masters tournament was held in Alexandria March 12. Seven Alexandria School District 206 teams competed in the tournament. In all, 36 teams representing 160 students and 14 school districts from west central Minnesota participated.

The Math Masters competition is designed to promote excellence in critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities as well as provide recognition to students for academic effort and achievement. The competition included a fact drill round, three individual rounds and three team rounds.

Two District 206 teams finished in the top five with several students taking individual honors. Following are the results.

• Woodland Elementary School (WES) Team, 1st place (team plaque and individual plaques awarded): MacKenzie Bakeberg, Emily Bear, Matthew Bittmann, Emily Prestby and Wyatt Riesselman.

• Garfield Elementary School (GES), 2nd place (team plaque and individual medallions awarded): Sarah Buse, Casey Call, Chris Call, Nicholas Dee and Blake Olhausen.

• Voyager Elementary School (VES) Team 2, 6th place (ribbons awarded): Abby DeReamer, Megan Hasz, Lydia Perry, Jake Wheeler and Grant Zwilling.

• Voyager Elementary Team 1, 9th place (ribbons awarded): Jared Gesell, Bethany Hasz, Dylan Larson, Marisa Otto and Wyatt Wittenburg.

In the fact drill competition with 160 students competing the ribbon winners were: Megan Hasz, 12th place (VES); Jake Wheeler, 15th place (VES); Emily Prestby, 16th place (WES); Blake Olhausen, 19th place (GES); and Matthew Bittmann, 20th place (WES).

In the individual problem-solving competition with 160 students competing, the following were medallion winners (top 10 finishers): Bittmann, 1st; Wheeler, 3rd; Prestby, 4th; Olhausen, 8th; and Hasz, 10th.

Ribbon winners were Riesselman, 13th; Chris Call, 15th; Hasz, 16th; and Casey Call, 17th.
