WILLMAR — An empty gas tank led to a Willmar man’s winning $300,000.
According to a news release from the Minnesota Lottery, Thomas Jensen of Willmar said he stopped for gas Thursday at Casey’s General Store on 19th Avenue Southwest and decided to pay inside rather than at the pump so that he could get a look at some lottery game tickets.
Jensen scratched the ticket at home and found a royal flush for a $100,000 prize.
“I reread the instructions and was thinking, ‘This can’t be an April Fool’s joke, can it?’” Jensen said in the release. Thursday was April Fool’s Day.
He continued scratching and found a second $100,000 prize on the same ticket.
He asked his wife to look at the ticket when she arrived home from work.
Before they put the ticket in their safe to protect the $200,000 in winnings, she found a third $100,000 prize on one of the other tickets in the game book.
Jensen claimed the $300,000 in prize money Friday at lottery headquarters in Roseville.
The Minnesota Lottery’s Casino Game Book is a $20 scratch game that includes six tickets filled with casino games to play for a chance to win up to $300,000.
