Alexandria's Vikingland Band Festival is once again an international event, as the 2010 Festival will feature a marching band from Norway.
The Notteroy School Band from Notteroy, Norway, will perform as the Honor Band of this year's festival parade. The Norwegian band will also perform with Alexandria's Jefferson High School Marching Band at the Root Beer Float Concert on the day before the parade.
The Notteroy band is traveling to Alexandria to help celebrate the band's 60th anniversary and to share a cross-cultural experience with American band students. The band has won the Norwegian National Championship for street marching two of the past three years. The Notteroy band includes students ages 10 to 19, and the group is bringing a total of 105 members and leaders on the trip to Alexandria.
This marks the third time a Norwegian band has marched in the festival, according to Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce Director Coni McKay.
"There is a strong mutual admiration between the Vikingland Band Festival and Norwegian marching bands," McKay said. "Alexandria embraces the Norwegian students with a warm welcome, and the Norwegian band members are truly thrilled to perform in our region, which enjoys such a rich Scandinavian heritage."
The 26th annual Vikingland Band Festival parade marching championship will be held Sunday, June 27. The Root Beer Float Concert will be held Saturday, June 26.
