John “Charley” Mattila, 88, died February 25, 2010 at home, surrounded by his family.

John “Charley” Mattila, 88, died February 25, 2010 at home, surrounded by his family.

John was born December 29, 1921 in Moe Township to Arvid and Lydia Mattila. John worked on his dad’s farm until he enlisted in the Air Force in 1942. He served in the European Theater, stationed in London and was reported missing in action in 1944. He was discharged in 1945.

After the service, John moved to Milwaukee and worked at several trucking companies. On November 1, 1952 John was united in marriage with Jean Schmolinski.

Survivors include his wife, Jean; daughter, Melinda of Lena; son, Wayne (Kathy) of Lena; sister, Helen Alto of Alexandria; brother, Howard of Milwaukee, WI; many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Arvid; sisters, Mayme, Elnma, Martha and Hilma; brothers, Bill, Axel, Ed, Stanley and Oscar.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 27 at Berth & Rosenthal Funeral Home in Peshtigo, WI with Pastor Bruce Blocher officiating. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery in Oconto, WI.

Honorary pallbearers were Jeanne Stumpf, Sandy Kneiszel, Francis Zander, Mary Frendin, Joyce Lindquist and Penny Pucher.
