Merle Betterman, 81

Merle Betterman died at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights on February 28, 2010. Interment was at Acacia Park Cemetery in Illinois.

Merle was born December 30, 1928 in Alexandria to Walter and Jennie (nee Durby) Betterman.

Merle served two years in the Navy, including during the Korean Conflict. He was a teacher at Luther North High School and a teacher and administrator in District 213. He was the commander of American Legion Post 525. He was an avid bowler, traveler and family man.

Merle was the beloved husband of Lieselotte “Lee” (nee Niebuhr) Betterman for 57 years; father of Kathleen Betterman and Janice (Patrick) McCrimmon; cherished grandfather of Jennifer, Shawn and Benjamin; fond brother of Ardith (Duane) McCoy; uncle to many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Gerald Betterman.
