The Mathcounts team from Discovery Middle School in Alexandria earned a 2nd place in the region and will compete in the state championship March 12 and 13 in Plymouth. The students won the right to participate at the state meet by winning regional competitions in February.

Members of the team are Ben Tollefson, Mitch Peck, Jack Ramsey and Marissa Wheeler. The coach is Denise Murken.

There will be 122 students from 37 schools from all over the state vying for the state title. The top four scorers will go on to represent Minnesota in the National Mathcounts finals at Disney World in Florida in May.

Mathcounts is a coaching and competition program that promotes math achievement by 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. The program stimulates student interest by making math achievement as challenging, exciting and prestigious as school sports.
