Vogeler 11th, Rooney 16th at State Class AA swimming and diving

Alexandria’s Aaron Rooney and Ben Vogeler both reached the finals of the State Class AA boys’ swimming and diving meet last weekend, with Rooney finishing 16th and Vogeler 11th.

Alexandria’s Aaron Rooney and Ben Vogeler both reached the finals of the State Class AA boys’ swimming and diving meet last weekend, with Rooney finishing 16th and Vogeler 11th.

“The Cards were represented in four individual events and two relays,” said head coach Mark Storhaug. “Aaron Rooney started things off, cracking the top 16 and qualifying for Saturday’s finals by placing 13th in Thursday’s diving preliminaries.

“Ben Vogeler recorded a half second improvement from his Section performance with a great turn at the far wall and made it through to the finals with a 13th place effort in the 50 free. “

Vogeler also competed in the 100 free where his season best time was not quite good enough for advancement, as he placed 19th.

“Jon Schwegel, Dylan Johnson, Bennett Freitag and Ben Vogeler raced in the 200 medley relay and narrowly missed qualifying for the finals, finishing in 17th place,” Storhaug said.

“Sam Vinje had another strong showing in the prelims of the 200 free, but finished 19th and the 200 free relay team of Rooney, Chris Vogeler, Vinje, and Ben Vogeler made an eight-tenths of a second improvement, 1:30.99, from the Section meet, but ended up in the dreaded 17th-place position as well. Their time was an agonizing three one-hundredths of a second away from getting into the finals.

On Saturday, the top 16 in each event went hard in the finals of the meet.

Alexandria’s Aaron Rooney performed three more times in the diving finals ending up in 16th place (298.55).

Ben Vogeler just missed breaking the 22-second mark but moved up to 11th place in the finals of the 50 free.

Edina successfully defended its title with nearly 100 points to spare. The Hornets tallied 307 points in part by winning two of the three relay events. Edina also garnered wins in two individual races.

Minnetonka finished second with 216.5 points, while Cretin-Derham Hall of St. Paul was third with 185 points.

Alexandria was 36th with seven points.
