To the editor:
Saturday, January 31, 2010 marked a tragic day for the communities of Alexandria and Glenwood. A truly wonderful person was lost, Patrick Callaghan, a fellow classmate and a longtime friend of mine and many.
Graduating from high school together I believe I can speak for most of us that knew him, in saying it was truly an honor to know such a great guy. He was a good friend and a terrific person, and could always make you laugh. Even if you only had the opportunity to meet him briefly, you could tell that he was the type of person that you wanted to hang out with, whether it is for that moment or maybe to make a new friend.
Always the one to crack a joke, make you laugh and smile. I never could have imagined that he could make someone hurt or cry. Unfortunately, that is what happened with his unforeseen death.
Not only I, but a whole community and anyone that knew Pat shed tears of mourning over his loss. He truly will be missed by all that got the chance to know him. Hopefully we can get past the sadness of it all, and instead keep remembering all of the good times he brought us.
I thought it was a wonderful sight to see all the people Pat touched honor him back, including the Alexandria Police Department, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Alexandria Fire Department, Glenwood Police Department, Pope County Sheriff’s Office and all others. They banded together in such a time for a fallen brother in uniform. I think it is great, and it makes me proud to be part of such caring and strong communities.
