Essay contest offers scholarships
In honor of Black History Month, Verizon Wireless and the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) are offering high school seniors the chance to participate in an essay contest.
In honor of Black History Month, Verizon Wireless and the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) are offering high school seniors the chance to participate in an essay contest to win one of 12 scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.
To qualify for the contest, students must maintain a grade point average of 2.0 and plan to attend a two- to four-year college or university in the fall of 2010.
Applicants are asked to write an essay of no more than 500 words that addresses how the evolution of wireless technology has changed the world. UNCF will review the applications and score the essays, with the top 12 awarded one of the following scholarships:
• 1st - $5,000, netbook and $100 Verizon Wireless gift card;
• 2nd place - $4,000 scholarship, netbook and $100 Verizon Wireless gift card;
• 3rd place - $3,000 scholarship, netbook and $100 Verizon Wireless gift card;
• 4th-12th place - $1,000 scholarships.
