While all blood types are needed and welcomed, type O negative blood is especially needed at this time, according to the American Red Cross.

Type O negative blood is called the universal donor because it can be transfused to any blood type and is a lifesaver in emergency situations when a patient’s blood type is unknown.

Upcoming blood donation opportunities in this area include:

•February 1, 1 to 7 p.m., Village Hall, Brandon.

•February 3, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Armory, 311 Broadway Street, Alexandria.

•February 4, noon to 6 p.m., Community Center, Osakis.

To donate blood, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or visit givebloodgivelife.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients.

A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old, must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health.
