Boyd was born July 27, 1926 in Hoffman to Conrad and Signe (Geisness) Berg. He grew up in Garfield and graduated from Alexandria High School in 1944.

Boyd enlisted in the United States Navy during WWII. He served in the Pacific Theater as a gunner and quartermaster on LST 953. After the service Boyd married his high school sweetheart, Majel C. Keck, on December 26, 1948 at First Congregational Church in Alexandria.

Boyd graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in education and years later returned for his master’s degree. Boyd and his family lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he taught elementary school until they returned to Minnesota in 1954. They bought a home in Brooklyn Center and raised their family. Boyd was a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent in the Edina and Golden Valley schools until he retired in 1985. Boyd and Majel moved to their lake home on Lake Carlos in 1987.

He is survived by his sons, Douglas (Shelley) Berg, Jeffrey (Patricia) Berg and Rick (Mary) Berg, all of Maple Grove; grandchildren, Alex (Kellie) Berg of St. Louis Park, Sarah (Dave) Sheen of Maple Grove, Rachael, Drew, Eric, Lauren and Mitchell Berg, all of Maple Grove; great-grandchild, Adeline Berg, of St. Louis Park; sister-in-law, Alice Keck; brother-in-law, Robert (Linda) Frisell; nieces and nephews, Barbara (Jerry) Hollom, Lori (Jim) Chapman, Jana (Gordy) Steck, Robin (Andy) Ronayne, Lynn Keck and her partner, Lisa; and John (Jennifer) Keck.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Majel; parents, Conrad Berg and Signe Berg (Sanstead) of Garfield; father- and mother-in-law, Henry and Evanell Keck of Alexandria; grandparents, Ole and Julia Berg and John and Anna Geisness; brother, Edwin Berg of Dayton, Ohio; sister, Kathleen Frisell of Brooklyn Center; and brother-in-law, Henry Keck Jr. of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

A funeral service was held January 12 at First Congregational Church in Alexandria with the Rev. Scott Keehn and Neal Olson officiating. Interment was at Carlos Prairie Cemetery in Carlos. Casket bearers were Alex Berg, Kellie Berg, Sarah Sheen, David Sheen, Rachael Berg, Drew Berg, Lauren Berg, Mitchell Berg and Eric Berg. Honorary casket bearer was Boyd’s great-granddaughter, Adeline Berg.
