Sheriff issues warning for Lake Burgen
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was notified of what appeared to be open water on the north end and southwest area of Lake Burgen.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was notified yesterday, January 7, of areas of what appeared to be open water on the north end and southwest area of Lake Burgen.
Deputies responded to the lake and found some areas of open water and very thin ice on the north end of Lake Burgen near the public access, according to a news release issued by the sheriff’s office.
Today, January 8, deputies checked the lake further and found several more areas of very thin ice conditions and open water scattered around the lake. These areas of thin ice and open water, according to the sheriff’s office, are “highly unusual for Lake Burgen.”
The cause of the open water and thin ice conditions is unknown at this time.
Because of these dangerous and unpredictable ice conditions, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Natural Resources are recommending no use of Lake Burgen – by snowmobiles or other persons venturing out on the ice.
It is possible, the release stated, that not all of the areas of thin ice have been located.
The sheriff’s office will be monitoring these dangerous ice conditions throughout the weekend and into next week, and will update the public if necessary.
