Students at Jefferson High School (JHS) in Alexandria are mastering the stock market through BestPrep’s Stock Market Game (SMG). The students joined BestPrep and more than 4,500 students in 175 schools around Minnesota to compete in the SMG.
Ty Granning, a teacher at JHS, is advising the students as part of the curriculum. SMG teaches prudent financial planning and money management through firsthand experience. The students learn both the struggles and the dividends of investing as they navigate their way through market fluctuations.
SMG is an interactive educational tool used in grades 4 to 12 to supplement subjects such as math, social studies and business education, while fulfilling Minnesota graduation standards.
Student teams participating in the game are given a virtual $100,000 to invest over a 15-week period. They compete with their peers throughout the state. Each team receives daily portfolio updates on their current holdings, brokerage fees, interest and team rankings.
Through the game, JHS students meet core educational requirements, while researching stocks, setting goals and learning to cooperate as a team.
