The Cardinal boys’ and girls’ Nordic ski teams got in their third meet of the season at Riverside Park in St. Cloud last Tuesday afternoon.
The race featured two 1 one-kilometer heat races, with the final 10 skiers racing for places. The top 10 placers earned points toward the overall team score as the Alexandria girls finished third and the boys finished fifth.
Sarah Peper and Melissa Gromatka both had strong finishes in the finals for the girls. Peper finished in 3:13 for a third-place finish, while Gromatka earned sixth place with a finals time of 3:18. Julia Sieling advanced to the second heat with a time of 3:30 in the first. She finished outside of the top 10 in the second with her time of 3:39.
“Rachel Borden, who skied a faster time of 3:28 in her first heat, didn’t advance but had a good race for her first varsity experience,” head coach Steve Devereaux said.
Austin McCoy was the only finals representative for the boys’ team. He earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 2:38. That was two seconds faster then his time of 2:40 in the first two heats. Mitch Evink skied a 2:50 in the first heat to advance but failed to make the finals with his time of 2:55 in the second.
“Jimmy Lovrien also skied 2:50 in his first heat but got beat out in the last five feet, just missing the cut,” Devereaux said.
