Letter - Buy open-ended toys

To the editor:
Christmas is soon arriving and everyone is frantically trying to figure out what gifts to get for the children in their lives. If this is you, take a minute and think about what they could get a lot out of. How much can they learn from it? Does it limit their creativity? Does the toy only give one way to play with it?
These are some really important questions to keep in mind when shopping for toys for children. Don’t spend lots of money on things like Leap Frog, video games, character dolls from TV and movies, etc. These kinds of toys limit children’s play and direct everything the child does. It’s like giving a child a toy and saying, “You can only play with it like this.”
With open-ended toys, the children are free to use their creativity and to explore. Giving toys like blocks, cars, baby dolls and so on give the child a chance to choose how they want to play with it. So, when you’re on your way to pick up Christmas gifts for children, try thinking about this.
