Three area men face multiple felony charges in connection to the alleged burglary of three summer cabins in the Elbow Lake area in Becker County.
The three are: Paul Anthony Smith, 39, of 521 Fifth St., No. 106, Mahnomen.
Roman Jesus Chavez Jr., 24, of 46311 284th St., Ponsford.
Joseph Adam Crowell, 19, of 48636 Highway 225, Ponsford.
All are charged with first-degree burglary with a dangerous weapon, second-degree burglary of a dwelling and two counts of third-degree burglary, all felonies.
According to court records:
On Nov. 13, tribal police officers responding to a report of suspicious behavior near Elbow Lake met a vehicle coming towards them. It stopped a short distance away, turned around and sped away. They pulled it over and the driver, Chavez, allegedly admitted he was wanted on a Hubbard County warrant.
Smith, who was in the front passenger seat, allegedly gave a false name to officers and later fled on foot.
Officers found a leaf blower, several deer and fish mounts and other items in the vehicle that had been stolen from three cabins.
Chavez allegedly admitted that the three men had used bolt cutters to cut the chain on a gate and then forcibly entered three unoccupied cabins and burglarized them.
A Marlin .22 caliber long rifle and ammunition were among the stolen items.
On Nov. 25, an arrest warrant was issued for Smith.
Crowell appeared in court Monday before District Judge Joe Evans, who set bail or bond at $30,000, with standard conditions for release, or $50,000 without conditions.
His next court appearance is Dec. 14
Chavez also appeared before Evans, who set bail or bond at $30,000, with standard conditions for release, or $50,000 without conditions.
