John was born November 23, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in Chicago and during his teenage years he moved with his family to the Twin Cities. John graduated from Kennedy High School in Bloomington.
While working in the Twin Cities, John met his future wife, Katherine Sather. They moved to the Alexandria area in 1990. On April 20, 1992 John and Katherine were united in marriage. They made their home at Nelson, where they were blessed with two children. John attended Alexandria Technical College. He was a licensed boiler operator and worked for Northern Food and Milk and later for Jenny-O. For the past five years, John has been working at Melrose Dairy Proteins.
John enjoyed the outdoors. He fished in the summer and winter. He also hunted pheasant, duck and geese. John liked to take his dogs out at night and hunt raccoon. He also looked forward to deer hunting. John enjoyed hunting deer and fish with a bow. Working in his garage, going mudding with his truck and listening to rock and roll music were things John enjoyed spending time at. John enjoyed doing all of these things with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine Thompson of Nelson; son, Dekker Thompson of Nelson; daughter, Nikole Thompson of Nelson; parents, Mark and Deb Thompson of Cottage Grove; grandparents, Phyllis Thompson of Alabama and Delores Ashby of Cottage Grove; brother, Phillip Thompson of Chicago; parents-in-law, Jerry and Barb Sather of Nelson; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Saturday, November 21 at Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. The Rev. Barbara Lund Thompson was the officiant. Keyes Burgess provided music. Honorary pallbearers included Phillip Thomson, Kevin Sather, Justin Wagner and J.C. Whitney.
