The Alexandria Lakes Area Special Olympics bowling team had many participants come away with top finishes at the 2009 regional bowling competition.
More than 300 athletes participated in the event at Garden Center Lanes last week. A total of 13 teams represented seven regions across the state.
Among all those athletes, many from the Alexandria Lakes Area team stood out. The local team had 25 athletes finish in first place in singles play.
It was an event made possible by a lot of help from local community members. The Alexandria girls’ soccer team and head coach Tom Roos, the Jefferson High School National Honor Society, Golden “K” Club, Kiwanis Club, Women’s Club, VFW Color Guard, Eagles Auxiliary and Retired Teachers all volunteered to help make the competition possible.
The local Lakes Area team is also coached by a group of volunteers that includes Carol Feldmann, Lynn Staples, Kari Kiesner, Joan Iverson, and many parents and group home workers.
The 2009 regional competition was a tune-up for the athletes before they head to the State Special Olympics bowling competition in November. The event is set to take place at South Town Bowl in Bloomington on November 13-15.
