Silverstreak volleyball season is over as Osakis falls to Kimball
The Osakis volleyball team took an early lead but could not hold off second-seeded Kimball Area in the second round of the Section 5A tournament last Friday night.
The Cubs rebounded from that 28-26 loss in game one to win 25-19, 25-17 and 25-22 in games two, three and four, respectively. Osakis knew it would have to play at the top of its game to beat a 22-6 Kimball team. The Silverstreaks played well but the Cubs had just a little bit more.
“These girls played a great match against Kimball,” head coach Kirsten Wessel said. “It was fun to watch the team fight so hard for their goals. The first game was extremely exciting, and it was great to come away with the win in that one. We were right in the other three games, as well. We just couldn’t hang onto the lead.
“These girls truly fought hard to the end, never letting up or giving up. I am very proud of the way they played. It would have been great to win, but we played well, and I am happy for that.”
Alicia Wagner and Steph Massmann both provided a presence at the net for Osakis. Wagner finished with 14 kills and two blocks, while adding a team-high 26 digs on defense. Massmann had 12 kills and four blocks.
The Silverstreaks had another productive season in the Prairie Conference. They finished as conference champions for the third straight year. They did so in dramatic fashion with a win over Upsala in the final regular season match of the season. That gave Osakis a 9-1 league record, while Upsala finished at 8-2.

Osakis 3, Royalton 1
The Osakis volleyball team had to work for it but picked up a four-game win over Royalton in the opening round of the Section 5A playoffs last Thursday night.
The Royals gave the Silverstreaks everything they could handle in the opening game. Osakis persevered and came out on top 26-24. They used the momentum from that win to pick up a 25-17 win in the second and take a big advantage.
But Royalton would not quit. The Royals came back and took game three 25-20. The Silverstreaks would not let it go a fifth game as they put things away with a 25-16 win in the fourth.
“We played very dominantly as times and not as much at others,” head coach Kirsten Wessel said. “We did do a nice job of passing tonight. That was one of our main goals, and we did, at times, pass very well. Serving will need to improve overall, but I am happy to see us playing so well together and enjoying the game.”
Emily Toop had a big night defensively with 23 digs. That passing led to a lot of kill opportunities at the net. Alicia Wagner, Trishia Walsh and Steph Massmann all took advantage of those throughout the night. Wagner finished with a team-leading 13 kills, while Walsh and Massmann added 11 and 10, respectively.
Amanda Kluver and Annalise Savageau set up a lot of those. The two combined for 25 assists, with Kluver leading the way with 13.
