Pioneers end season for Osakis gridders
Osakis reached the Section 6AA semifinals before facing Pierz
An exciting season for the Osakis football team ended sooner than the Silverstreaks wanted it to after Pierz handed them a 37-0 loss in the second round of the Section 6AA playoffs on Saturday night.
Pierz 37, Osakis 0
The Pioneers came into the game as a team that has dominated opponents on the ground all season long. That did not change on Saturday night. Pierz ran for 379 yards and scored all six of its touchdowns on rushing plays.
John Omann is the leader of a talented group of backs for the Pioneers. He finished with 209 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries.
The Silverstreaks’ running game has been dominant this season, too. But on Saturday night, they were held in check by a stingy Pierz defense. Chris Ludwig was held to less than 100 yards after rushing for more than 200 yards in the opening round against Ottertail Central.
The Pioneers wasted no time gaining the early momentum. They opened the scoring with an eight-yard run by Omann in the first quarter. They then added a Cody Stangl touchdown and another Omann run of 28 yards to make it an 18-0 game after the second quarter.
The Silverstreaks needed a spark right after halftime but it just did not come. Instead, the Pioneers added three more touchdowns in the third quarter to put the finishing touches on the win.
Osakis 32,
Ottertail Central 7
Osakis got to the second round by taking care of Ottertail Central with ease last Tuesday night.
Ludwig was dominant against the Bulldogs. He ran for 213 yards and two touchdowns, including a run of 58 yards that helped put the finishing touches on the win in the fourth quarter.
Dominic Baker was right beside him to help out in the running game. He got the Silverstreaks going with a touchdown run of 15 yards in the second quarter. He then punched one in from the one to make it a 14-0 game before the half.
The defense also stood up to the challenge of facing a physical Bulldogs’ offense for the second time this season. Cody Torkelson led the team with 17 defensive points. Cole Erie also had a big night with 16 defensive points. His 65-yard interception return for a touchdown put an exclamation point on the win in the fourth quarter. He also recovered a fumble for the Silverstreaks.
The win was the second of the season over Ottertail Central. Osakis finished the year 8-2 and gave fans a lot to cheer about along the way. The Silverstreaks opened the season 7-0 before a loss in rainy conditions against Browerville in week eight.
They finished as co-Prairie Conference champions with the Tigers. They also picked up a tournament win in their first season in the Class AA field.
