Students in preschool through 8th grade at Zion Lutheran School in Alexandria recently participated in the Marathon for Nonpublic Education.

With a goal of $8,000, the students collected donations for their fundraising walk. They raised more than $11,800, with additional donations from local businesses.

Money raised will go toward a collection center cabinet, the gym sound project, the bus fund and individual classroom needs.

Because the students reached their goal, they were given the opportunity to have a pie-throwing event on October 14, in which the teachers and principal were the targets.
