Season ends for Ebert, Johnson in 8AA doubles tennis
The Cardinal doubles team fell to the team from St. Cloud Tech
Brianna Ebert and Laura Johnson’s run through the Section 8AA doubles tournament came to an end on Monday against a familiar opponent.
The Cardinal girls’ tennis duo battled St. Cloud Tech’s Rachel Zweiner and Abby Mix in the quarterfinal round of the tournament. Zweiner and Mix came in as the No. 1 seed in the south half of the section, and they played like it.
The Tigers’ duo jumped out early with a 6-1 win in the first set. Ebert and Johnson then fell behind 4-1 in the second before winning two straight games to make it 4-3. Zweiner and Mix ended any thoughts of a comeback by Alexandria by taking the next two games to finish off the match 6-3.
“It was a sad way to end the season for these two,” head coach Dave Ronning said. “They had so much success throughout the season and through the playoffs, but we have to look at the big picture and think about all the good things they did this year and not base it all on this one match.”
The match was the last time these two will be playing together on the high school level. Johnson will be lost to graduation after this year. Ebert should return for her senior season to help the Cardinals fight for the Central Lakes Conference title in 2010.
