Enrollment inches up: District 206 pleased with trend

The numbers are up and that makes administrators and board members of Alexandria School District 206 happy.

Tom Wieczorek, business manager for the district, presented the enrollment numbers at Monday night’s regular school board meeting.

“Our enrollment numbers are up from our projections,” said Wieczorek, who has to submit the numbers to the state on October 1.

He noted that the most exciting increase was at the kindergarten level. The district projected that there would be 286 students, but the enrollment number as of October 1, was 316 – an increase of 30 students.

“If that is going to be the trend, it will be a good one for the future,” he said.

District 206 Superintendent Terry Quist agreed and said, “This is a good thing to see. Hopefully it will continue.”

Wieczorek explained that the increase in enrollment reflects the census work that was done awhile back, adding that the district suspected there would be an increase in the 0-5 age group.

Although there was a large increase in the kindergarten group, the overall increase for K-12 was 12 students.

Quist told school board members that enrollment numbers were not only above projections, but they were also above what the enrollment numbers were at the end of last year’s school year.

“We haven’t been like this in a couple of years,” said Quist.

Another large increase was in grades 7-9, which saw an increase of 11 more students than projected. The district expected 891 students, but as of October 1, there were 902 students.

Overall, the district was pleased with its enrollment and hopes the increase in students will continue.

ENROLLMENT NUMBERS

Kindergarten – 286 students projected, 316 enrolled.

1-3 grades – 836 students projected, 827 enrolled.

4-6 grades – 851 students projected, 844 enrolled.

7-9 grades – 891 students projected, 902 enrolled.

10-12 grades – 928 students projected, 915 enrolled.

Total number of students projected – 3,892.

Total number of students enrolled as of

October 1 – 3,904.
