Orrel Irene Kalpin, 96, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at Golden Livingcenter - Otter Tail Lake in Battle Lake.
Orrel was born May 6, 1913 to Emil and Randena (Olson) Olson in Parkers Prairie. She was baptized and confirmed at Elmo Lutheran Church. Following her graduation from Parkers Prairie High School, she was united in marriage to Erwin Kalpin on May 10, 1932 in Wadena.
They farmed together and she also worked at Larson’s Hardware in Parkers Prairie for many years, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Her husband, Erwin, retired in 1988, at which time they moved into Parkers Prairie. She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school, participated in ladies aid and, with Erwin, sang in the choir for 60 years. She liked to bowl, dance, play cards, knit, crochet and other crafts.
Orrel is survived by three sons, Buddy (Eunice) Kalpin of Monticello, Dennis (Ruth) Kalpin and Marshall Kalpin, both of Alexandria; daughter, Kathy (Vinal) Franson of Alexandria; eight grandchildren, Dan Kalpin, Lanny Kalpin, Laurie Erlandson, Nancy Wolf, Susan Empting, Katie Olberg, Jodi Loecke and K.C. Franson; 20 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 71 years, Erwin; and seven sisters, Ruth, Helga, Prudence, Selma, Gladys, Ethel and Louise.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 19 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kirk Lee officiating. Music was provided by organist, Gloria Hollatz and vocalist, Dedra Zwieg. Burial was at Parkers Prairie Cemetery.
Pallbearers were her grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers were her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
