Cross country: Fernholz All-Conference at Heart O' Lakes meet, Lakers at Albany

West Central Area eighth grader Kylee Fernholz earned Heart O’ Lakes All-Conference honors, running to a second place finish behind Class A’s top-ranked Maddie McClellan of Perham.

Fernholz ran a 15:45, just 27 seconds behind the Perham champion, who was third in last year’s state meet.

The top 15 runners in both the boys’ and girls’ races earned All-Conference honors.

West Central Area finished fourth overall as a girls’ team and seventh in the boys’ division.

John Ohloft’s 32nd place finish led the boys’ team as he finished in 19:37.55.

Perham’s Sam Stoll was the individual champion, running the course in 16:38.

For the Knight boys’ squad, four of the top five runners were out due to illness.

Minnewaska at Albany

The Minnewaska boys’ and girls’ cross country teams were finally back in action after poor weather had sidelined them from competition since September 26.

Once they finally took to the course in Albany last Tuesday, the Laker boys’ team was only able to run with two varsity athletes because of sickness and injury. Gage Sachs paced the boys with a ninth-place finish in a time of 18:09. Luke Musselman was behind him, coming in 37th with a time of 25:02. Tom Lauinger did not run because of sickness and Taylor Heald was out with a leg injury.

Madi Sachs once again led the Laker girls. She finished in fourth place with a time of 16:10. Britta Lundblad followed her in 34th place in a time of 18:52. Hayley Sachs came in 36th in a time of 19:07, and Mady Phillips and Sarah Roering finished 39th and 40th with times of 19:50 and 20:35, respectively.

“The weather has made it very difficult to train properly,” head coach Bob Mork said. “With our last two meets being cancelled because of weather, the runners have lost a racing edge that we will try to regain before the conference and section meets. In my seven years of coaching cross country, we have never had a stretch of weather like this year.

“Our meets prior to the weather change in late September were extremely warm, which are no conducive to racing, but with the weather conditions since then, we would gladly struggle with heat again. Hopefully, the weather will stabilize so that we have good running conditions for our important upcoming meets this month.”
